The company

The company SCHOCK Druck- und Papierverarbeitung GmbH produces individual paper packaging for an international clientele. With around 20 employees, it is subject to occupational safety and training requirements. Petra Schock, the management assistant, is responsible for the organisation and implementation of safety training, in particular for the production staff who are confronted with safety-related challenges on a daily basis.

challenges

One of the biggest challenges was the implementation of occupational safety requirements in production. The requirements here are much more extensive than in the office, since in addition to the classic topics such as the right lifting and carrying and the preventing of falls in particular, the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is an important issue. There was a specific problem with the topic of wearing safety shoes. Many long-term employees did not accept the need for PPE, as they were accustomed to a less strict implementation of occupational safety. Changing habits was a significant hurdle, as long-time employees, including executives, struggled to accept the new security requirements. Despite repeated attempts to loosen up the subject through videos, posters and training, it was difficult to achieve acceptance.
Another problem was the inefficiency of face-to-face trainings. These had to be carried out in several small groups, which costs both the employees and Ms. Schock very much time and the motivation of the participants was not always high.

The solution by skillsforwork

The introduction of skillsforwork as a digital learning platform, has helped overcome these challenges. Ms. Schock largely opted for e-learnings, to provide all employees with flexible learning. The platform made it possible for the employees to complete the training in small, manageable units, which significantly increased acceptance and learning success. Particularly useful was the opportunity to complete the training at any time and at their own pace. The acceptance was high among office workers, especially on topics such as first aid, fire protection and data protection. In production the feedback was Initially mixed, but the flexibility of the platform and the ability to take tests after each learning session increased employee engagement.

Particularly noteworthy is the fact that Ms. Schock did not pressure the participants to pass the tests, but gave them the freedom to finish the courses at their own pace . With modules on still rather unknown topics such as phishing and data protection, the participants felt motivated to acquire new knowledge. This approach led to a positive feedback. The production showed a growing awareness of the safety aspects. Wearing hearing protection and safety clothing was accepted.

Recommendations

Petra Schock recommends to other companies that have similar occupational safety challenges the use of skillsforwork. Particularly noteworthy is the flexibility of the platform, which it allows participants to organise their training independently and in small, easy modules to learnMs. Schock recommends skillsforwork in particular companies that cannot offer internal email addresses for their employees. For such companies, the platform offers an excellent solution for user login and administration.
