Case Study
Schenk Tanktransport GmbH
- Challenge:The decentralised structure of 430 drivers makes the training and communication process more difficult, amplified by the lack of willingness to participate and low digital skills. In addition, there are the lack of company-owned end devices and the reluctance to use private smartphones. Personal training by driver coaches has therefore been indispensable for a long time.
- Solution:With skillsforwork digital training courses have been introduced to reduce the administrative burden and to use video sequences to learn in an attractive and progressive way. The progress of each participant is recorded via a knowledge query. This makes the training more individual and thus more efficient. The flexibility of the platform saves time in training creation and thus greatly simplifies the training process.
- Modules:Health & safety and data protection

challenges
Heiner Genings has been acteve with the Schenk Tanktransport GmbH since 2019. As a QHSSE manager (Quality, Health, Safety and Environment), he is responsible, among other things, for training employees and maintaining the valid availability of personal documents and qualifications. This also includes the information of clients as well as ensuring that legal requirements are met and that information is passed on to employees in the form of training if necessary. "Schenk Tanktransport GmbH stands for safety first and continuous development – both in the operational business and in the training of our employees", explains Mr Genings.
According to Genings, the biggest challenge is to reach the 430 drivers distributed throughout Germany with training and information. Due to the decentralized structure, the employees are stationed at different locations, from larger units with up to 40 people to very small locations with only one or two employees. This makes communication and training more difficult.
In addition, drivers are not uniformly supplied with appropriate IT equipment such as smartphones, which makes the distribution of training content more complicated. In addition, some drivers have difficulty handling digital devices or are unwilling to use their private smartphones for corporate communications. These different conditions make effective and uniform communication more difficult. In order to meet these challenges, the Schenk Tanktransport GmbH uses so-called ‘driver coaches’ to train all drivers personally and provide them with the necessary information.
The solution by skillsforwork
By introducing the digital training platform skillsforwork many of the problems so far have been solved. The software makes it possible for Schenk Tanktransport GmbH, to make their training more efficient and to significantly reduce the administrative burden.
“Before, we had a lot paper and a lot of PowerPoint training”, Genings remembers. "Now we have the opportunity to include video sequences in the e-learnings and additionally create a knowledge query using quizzes. This gives us much more opportunities to pick up drivers better.” Particularly important for Genings were the knowledge queries, which ensure that the employees actually understood the content.
Especially in the field of dangerous goods transport, it is particularly important that drivers understand exactly what content is being conveyed. This is not so much about extremely demanding tests, but rather about capturing the central aspects of safe handling of dangerous goods.
Another great advantage of the platform was the possibility to divide employees into groups and thus carry out targeted training. The flexibility of the platform was also perceived as a great advantage: “Our driver coaches no longer have to visit each individual driver in person, which saves us a lot of time. Training can be carried out digitally and progress is recorded centrally.”, explains Mr Genings.
Recommendations
Heiner Genings recommends that companies that face similar challenges in training their employees also use digital training platforms such as skillsforwork. The platform makes it easier to design your own training courses without relying on external tools. This leads to considerable time savings, as all employees can be trained at the same time. However, he stresses that digital training alone is not sufficient. Personal contact in face-to-face events remains essential, especially when it comes to security-related topics.
